Week 4

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 04/25/2016 - 01:41
Brothers,

As always, we hope this blog post finds you in good health and good spirits, wherever you may be.

Before delving into this week's events, a quick construction update: the brotherhood is very excited about the progress of the house. The 2nd floor porch, "The Beach", is well on its way to completion, as is the front ramp that will be instrumental in allowing Tri-Kap to officially open. Daily progress leaves us optimistic about the prospect of being able to host official events in our hallowed halls within the next month.

This weekend was an eventful one, and began with a rewarding philanthropy event organized by Cody Pennypacker '18, our phil chair. A handful of brothers received their phil hours for the term by attending a viewing and discussion of "The Hunting Ground", a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. The film was extremely rewarding, and the brotherhood hopes to employ some of the key lessons from the movie to make our house a safe, secure space on campus. Tri-Kap had the highest participation rate of any Greek house in the event, which we are very proud of.

I'm sure I speak for all those who attended when I say we cannot thank Sam enough for his work in putting this great event together. Along with traditional food and authentic Seder setup, Sam put a "Tri-Kap twist" on this Seder making brothers of all religions and beliefs feel welcome. We pride ourselves on our diversity and acceptance of others' traditions; and this is just another example of that mantra.

Saturday night saw Tri-Kap's first participation in Collis Governing Board's weekly trivia night, hosted in One Wheelock. A small crew of brothers, including a couple of ex-trivia bowl-ers, answered questions ranging from Kobe to Pixar Films over smooth brews and snacks. We are hoping to transpose this trivia night to Wednesday, when Salt Hill Pub hosts Trivia night.

Brothers at CGB triviaFinally, today was an IM softball day. Bros arrived at the field early to take BP and infield practice, and man did it pay off during the game. Thanks to a 10-run second inning and solid left field defense by Josh Lange '17, Tri-Kap fended off a comeback from "The Village Idiots" to win 20-14, putting us in prime position for the impending playoffs.

Jerry Peng puffs his way to first base in an attempt to beat out an infield single.
If you find yourself in the upper valley, feel free to stop by or give us a shout via email!

Brotherhood Spotlight: Cesar Rufino

Tri-Kap Blog - Sun, 04/17/2016 - 23:40
Brothers,
To further foster the connection between the many esteemed alumni of Tri-Kappa and the current undergraduates, we have decided to bring back the "Brotherhood Spotlight", a periodic post in which an undergraduate brother shares his experiences, viewpoints, and the role of Tri-Kap in his life. We hope these posts will allow the potential for connection between alumni and undergraduates while yielding a strong sense of the diverse character of the brotherhood of which we are extremely proud. Enjoy.
YiK,Jeff Lang, VP
Brothers,
I hope this post finds you all well, no matter where you are. My name is Cesar Rufino and I am a member of the Class of 2018 hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Specifically, I lived in Roger’s Park for the first 18 years of my life, so transitioning to the rural life of Dartmouth was definitely a struggle. I am a Mexican-American first-generation student, and the eldest of 4. I have a 17-year-old sister, a 12-year-old brother, and an 8-year-old brother. As a child, my life was definitely different from those of my siblings, for I was part of my parents’ own transition to life in the United States; they immigrated to this country when they were teenagers. For example, I did not play any organized sports until high school. Fortunately, I cherished my time, and I was Varsity captain of both the Cross Country and Track teams; I ended up qualifying for the state finals in both sports a combined 4 times.

I am currently one of the Tri-Kap’s three rush chairs and hope to continue to be involved in the house. Outside of Tri-Kap, I am a First-Year Peer Mentor, a Spanish tutor, and am currently involved in the Rocky Global Leadership Program. Most importantly, I have been serving on QuestBridge’s National Ambassador Executive Board for the past 10 months. QuestBridge is a scholarship program that aims to match students from underprivileged backgrounds with elite postsecondary institutions; I was fortunate enough to receive a very generous offer from Dartmouth and ease any financial burden on my father, who is a local residential painter in Chicago. Now, while on the board, I aim to increase applicant numbers and show high school students that there is no ceiling to what they can achieve.

My ultimate goal in life is to provide for my family. They have supported each and every endeavor of mine up to this point, something I am eternally thankful for. On a larger scale, I am currently studying Government because I am very interested in immigration, urban, and youth policy. I want to be able to go back to the city of Chicago and provide for those that need assistance as I did.

Family is the most important thing to me. I always try my best to go home over interim and see my siblings. Whenever I am back in Chicago, I serve as a soccer coach for my 12-year-old brother’s youth squad. I have been a sporadic youth soccer coach for five years now, and hope to continue supporting my siblings in any way possible. Coming to Dartmouth was extremely emotional for me, for I was leaving the foundation and people that gave me strength every day of my young life. On campus, my freshman year was a dark one. However, Tri-Kap eventually became my family away from home and I am proud to consider every one of my brothers as part of the system that motivates me every day. Now, in a new Kappa lodge, our fraternity has the opportunity to grow stronger than ever. I am proud to be a part of this process and look to give everything that I have to the brotherhood for years to come.

Please, do not hesitate to reach out to me if you would ever like to have a conversation, are up on campus, or visit Chicago. My mom and I will cook you up a mean meal.

Move-In Continues

Tri-Kap Blog - Fri, 04/08/2016 - 22:32
Brothers,

The beginning of this term marks a momentous occasion for the brothers of Tri-Kappa: move-in to the new Kappa lodge at 1 Webster. I'm sure I speak for the entire brotherhood when I say we cannot begin to describe our excitement at both the improvements made to the house and the prospect of making this new space our home. A special shout out to the members of move-in crew, especially Sam Libby '17, Keaton Renta '16, Ronak Kanwar '17, Vince Puzak '17, and Ted Poatsy '17, who worked tirelessly to prepare the new house for its new inhabitants. Also infinite thanks to brother Bruce Williamson whose team has made a huge effort to make the house available to the brothers this spring term. While much remains to be done, progress has continued at a rapid pace, and the brothers look forward to welcoming any and all alums to see the new lodge.

Meet Maia Hobart, a black lab pup currently under the tutelage and care of brothers Josh Lange '17 and Josh Schoenbart '16. As Zeus Hobart exits this spring with brother Brett Szalapski '15, the brotherhood looks forward to creating many new memories with this new member of the family.

Maia HobartAnd despite working hard during the day to move into the new Kappa lodge, brothers have still found time to excel around campus. Josh Tupler '16  has recently received the prestigious Fullbright scholarship, and for that the brotherhood congratulates him immensely. Charles Cai '17 came in 2nd in the Cornell Spring Opener golf tournament last weekend playing for the men's golf team. And a large group of brothers represented Tri-Kap at the spring Dance-A-Thon, a 12 hour dance party hosted to support a variety of Upper Valley charities.

We are look forward to keeping all of the alums updated on the status of move-in, and are very excited to welcome brothers to the new lodge this spring.

Meet Julie Kalish

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 02/15/2016 - 10:38
The brotherhood has welcomed two house advisers into the fold as part of new requirements for Greek Houses to have a faculty member of each sex help bridge the gap between Dartmouth professors and students while also acting as a valuable resource for guidance. In addition to Roger Ulrich '77, a former Tri-Kap and Ralph Butterfield Professor of Classical Studies, we have Julie Kalish '91 (check out her bio https://writing-speech.dartmouth.edu/people/julie-l-kalish). In order to better introduce her to those of you who haven't been around to take a class with her or attend one of our academic talks with her, her former student, Eric Fett '18, offered to interview her.

Here is the interview that Eric, one of our rush chairs, wrote after sitting down with her:

Hey Alumns, I’M EXCITED TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR NEW HOUSE ADVISOR Julie Kalish. Stemming from the Dartmouth Moving Forward initiative, the college requires every house to have one male and one female house sponsor (or advisor). That advisor is in charge of overseeing house events, connecting Tri-Kap to the larger Dartmouth academic community, and acting as a faculty resource for academic and emotional support. Our female advisor is a member of Dartmouth's Class of 1991 who could never let go of the granite state’s beauty. After growing up in a suburb outside of Philadelphia, Ms. Kalish’s first college visit to Dartmouth was an inspiring one. Instantly falling in love with Hanover’s spring beauty, she chose to apply early and never looked back. While at Dartmouth, she followed her passions majoring in English and minoring studio art—well basically considering she was two classes away and did not even realize. Her biggest activity on campus was RWIT where she started to develop her passion for teaching. She boasts of living in the Choates before they were decrepit, joining Panarchy because of their inclusivity, artsy nature, and quirkiness, and being affiliated with Casque & Gauntlet her senior year.  After graduating, she did not know what to pursue; she loved culture, she loved traveling, and she loved London. So, she applied and was accepted to University College London graduate school program for English. Eventually, graduate school ended, Professor Kalish, as she would now be known, started working as a TA for writing 2-3 back at Dartmouth. After a year of working, getting a higher degree job and following her dream of becoming a professional puppeteer caused her to leave Dartmouth once again and find work in New York City. A job with Sesame Street was her biggest fantasy. Getting closer to that dream, she worked an unpaid internship at a children’s television workshop while being a personal assistant to a celebrity power couple for some extra money. Eventually, the idea starts to dawn on her that the workshop could not be her end career so she goes back once again to Dartmouth to now teach writing 2-3. At only 26, she was responsible for teaching fifteen Dartmouth students how to properly write and more importantly THINK. She loved teaching but felt that she was a little too young to be a full time professor and maybe a city would be a better social environment. Moving to San Francisco was not as easy as expected, and working as a grant writer in the city for about a year, came to the realization that Dartmouth was her true home and teaching young adults how to critically think was truly her passion. 5 years later, Professor Kalish made the decision that a PhD in English was not the route for her and made the decision to pursue law school to make a difference. A trip to Alaska made her fervent about environmental issues, so she quit teaching for a small time to pursue law school at VLS (Vermont Law School). Post-graduation, VLS gave her an impeccable offer if to come back and build a new program to help revamp the bar passing rate. She knew the school, she knew the system, and she knew the student. She could not refuse. However, shortly after accepting the job, Professor Kalish had a final awakening. What she loved about teaching undergraduates is that they have a fresh mind and are just beginning their professional path. All VLS students are too many student loans deep into not graduating, so sometimes it’s hard to convince potentially out-of-place lawyers that a different path may be more conducive to their success. She ended up quitting her job at VLS, and once again returned to Dartmouth to teach writing 2-3 and 5 while also working in conjunction with the ACLU of Vermont.
I had Professor Kalish my freshman Fall for Writing 5, so I can attest to her kind heart, great teaching skills, and ability to make young adults want to learn. She allows all her students to develop their own right answer as long as they can provide a sound argument as to how they arrived to their own conclusion. I personally grew in ways I cannot express in both my oral and written debate skills, and I credit that to Professor Kalish. She is a soft-spoken woman who will tell you what you need hear to improve. She is a great confidential source for everyone in our house, both in academia and personal growth. I could not be more thrilled to have been given such a great faculty member as our new house advisor.
Best,Eric Fett '18

Winter Rush

Tri-Kap Blog - Wed, 02/10/2016 - 17:33
Kappa Kappa Kappa welcomed four new members into the class of 2018 this winter: Sachin Vadodaria, Noe Medrano, Samuel Kim, and Timothy Connor.
Sachin studies Economics and Computer Science and is involved with the Dartmouth Investment and Philanthropy Program. As a huge soccer fan, he supports Arsenal FC.Noe is an Economics major. He plays pickup soccer and poker on campus.Samuel is a Chem major and is doing research about obesity treatment. He is also in the powerlifting club.Timothy studies history and classics and writes for The Dartmouth.
Theodore Poatsy ’17 and Brett Szalapski ’15 will help them to smoothly integrate into the house. The ‘18s especially are excited to more members to their class. As a class, they strive to encourage and aid the new winter members to learn our house’s values. Though it will prove to be a challenge with an off-campus house in the brutally cold and snowy winter of Hanover, the new members are determined to become integral parts of their class and Kappa Kappa Kappa as a whole.
As the icy winter term moves along, Kappas await with excitement completion of the new house on 1 Webster. We will still have the off-campus house, which, if filled with ‘18s, could be a unique way to establish closer bonds within the class before sophomore summer. Several ‘18s have already expressed interest in living off-campus house.
For the immediate future, we look on as the Winter new members enjoy learning the spirit of Tri-Kap from the rest of the brotherhood.

January Check-In

Tri-Kap Blog - Tue, 01/26/2016 - 10:55
Tri-Kaps have stormed back to campus for the final term before moving into our renovated home at 1 Webster. We've managed to enjoy the fruits of brotherhood by hosting social events at the brothers' off-campus house, at sororities and other fraternities. In the Fall, brothers and their dates turned out for the formal the DOC House on the North end of Occom Pond.

(House in the Fall 2015 - Danny Katz '16)

Transitioning from Fall to Winter has allowed the new 18s to bring additional new members through Winter rush. In addition to our twenty-one men from Fall rush, this Winter we welcomed:
  • Samin Kim '18
  • Sachin Valodaria '18
  • Cameron Isen '18
  • Timothy Connor '18
  • Noe Medrano '18
Now with 18s as rush chairs and other execs, it is nice to see them learning responsibility to prepare for the new house. Working with Bruce Williamson '74 to realize our dream of an improved house is about finish as brothers expect to move into the new house.

(House in the Winter - Anka Tezcan '15)
Seeing tangible progress from the Rockefeller Center for both Fall and Winter rush seemed to have helped increase our rush class for the second straight year. With active brothers spanning four classes, the brotherhood's meetings at Tom Dent Cabin every Wednesday night have been a rowdy time for us to come together as a brotherhood.

(A look inside the new third-floor suite - Bruce Williamson '74)

Let us know if you're coming up for Winter Carnival- February 11-14, 2016.

Look forward to more communication this term from the brothers.

August 28th Update

Tri-Kap Blog - Fri, 08/28/2015 - 14:05
Brothers,

As the sun sets on 15X, the '17s brothers of Tri-Kappa could not have asked for a better end to a fantastic summer. Some of the highlights from the past couple of weeks:

Last weekend, for the traditional summer brotherhood trip (and to celebrate our back to back Masters championship), a group of brothers traveled down to Narragansett, RI to Chris Loughlin '17's beach house. The weekend was highlighted by card games of all varieties, football and frisbee on the beach, an impressive number of games of "Cornhole," and a fireworks show at Point Judith CC. It was a special way to end the term, and all involved would like to sincerely thank Chris and his family for their generosity.

Chris Loughlin, Vince Puzak, Elana Selitsky (gf of Jeff), Jeff LangBrothers Josh Lange, Jeff Lang, Sam Agler, Sam Libby, and Vince Puzak enjoy happy hour on the porch At the same time, brothers at home were fortunate to participate in Brother Joe Peña '10's wedding. All who attended the rehearsal dinner on Friday night noted what a treat it was to meet the alumni who generously welcomed the undergraduates into their celebration. We would all like to wish a hearty congratulations to Joe on this great occasion. 1 Webster will always be a home to you Joe!
Today, the brothers were fortunate to share an EBA's pizza lunch with the construction workers from DOMUS Inc. who are currently working on our long awaited renovations at 1 Webster. It was great to meet some of the workers, get an update on the progress, and witness firsthand the incredible progress that has been made this summer. The brothers would especially like to thank Bruce Williamson and foreman Mike Higgins for their accommodation of our endless curiosity about the house this summer. We hope to do another event like this again in the fall.
The brothers and workers gathered together today at 1 Webster to share a pizza lunchAs Summer VP, it has been my privilege to share the activities of the brotherhood during 15X. I think I speak for the whole '17s class when I say this summer has been a fabulous bonding experience for all of us, and we are tighter than ever despite the lack of our Hallowed Halls. Our summer motto, "No House, No Problem", was definitely realized.
Looking forward, we could not be more excited to welcome the '16s back to campus, and to welcome the next generation of brothers to Tri-Kappa in the fall.

August 18th Update

Tri-Kap Blog - Tue, 08/18/2015 - 23:13
Brothers,

As always, we hope this blog post finds you all in happiness and good health. The past few weeks of this summer have been some of the most amazing of the term, and even better times await until finals period.

Last Saturday, the brotherhood had its termly Lock-In, in which the entire brotherhood spent the day together at the off campus house, engaging in discussion and a variety of activities. With brother Joe Minichiello '17 grilling up burgers and dogs, and some beautiful weather, a great time was had by all.

On Sunday, joined by the Alpha Phi sorority, the brotherhood made its first trip to the copper mines. Again blessed with great weather, everyone enjoyed the thrill of 40 foot cliff jumping.

The brothers of Tri-Kap and the sisters of Alpha Phi at the copper mines
A week went by and the '17's brotherhood prepared itself for one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer: Masters. By Wednesday, after much deliberation, the brotherhood had decided on its two representative teams: brothers Sam Agler and Josh Lange (A), and brothers Chris Loughlin and Jeff Lang (B). Joined by a huge contingent of '15s and '16s who came up for the weekend, the brotherhood avidly and loudly cheered on our representatives. Though Agler and Lange experienced some bad luck early on, Chris Loughlin and Jeff Lang were able to make it all the way to the finals, and secure the victory for Tri-Kappa. The celebration lasted through the night. The fraternity has now won the tournament two years in a row, thanks to the play of Charles Cai '16 and Danny Katz '16 last summer.

The brothers in the basement of Chi Heorot after their Masters victory
This coming weekend, the brothers look forward to finishing out the summer with a retreat to brother Chris Loughlin's house in Rhode Island. Prior to that, however, many brothers are excited to attend the rehearsal dinner for brother Joe Peña '10's wedding, which will take place at the DOC house. We cannot thank Joe enough for offering to include us in this important event in his life, and offer our infinite congratulations to him for this momentous occasion.

Again, if you are ever in the Hanover area, please do not hesitate to reach out. Wherever our halls may be, any space inhabited by the brothers of Tri-Kappa will always be a home to you.

YiK,
Jeff Lang

Brotherhood Spotlight: Ted Poatsy

Tri-Kap Blog - Tue, 08/04/2015 - 16:07
In an effort to continually improve connections between undergraduate members of the brotherhood and graduates, we are asking a few brothers this summer to share a little bit about themselves--proudest accomplishments, ambitions, passions, whatever they'd like. We now shine the spotlight on Ted Poatsy, a '17 Classics and Computer Science double major on the club soccer team.

Brothers,Hi, how’s it going? My name is Ted Poatsy and I am from Salfordville, PA, which is a mostly rural town about 40 miles outside of Philadelphia. In Salfordville, I grew up alongside of my two older sisters Laura and Carolyn. While I was growing up, my parents had a really hard time trying to slow me down, so they got me involved with soccer, baseball, and Boy Scouts. As a result, each of those have had a huge impact on what I do today.  I am still playing soccer, most recently for the college’s club team. This summer I started working with the local Boy Scout Troop in Hanover, so that I can help other kids become Eagle Scouts like I did. And as for baseball, I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan (I especially am a fan of Kyle Hendricks who is a Dartmouth `12). Before coming to Dartmouth, I spent four years at The Hill School, which is a boarding school in Southeastern Pennsylvania.Poatsy decked out in Eagle Scout gearAt Dartmouth, I am currently declared as an Ancient History Major through the Classics Department, but am considering pairing it with either Government or Computer Science. I chose my major by finding departments whose professors both challenge me intellectually and help me develop skills that will be useful later in life. Outside of class, I work two jobs (Managing Dartmouth Green Corps, and UGA-ing Freshmen), and I stay active by playing club soccer and intramural sports for the house. Poatsy sporting his favorite house shirtWhile I was living on a substance-free freshman hall in the River Cluster, I didn’t find myself going out to many fraternities. But, as the year progressed both Anka Tezcan `15 and Hector Iturbe `16, Tri-Kap brothers and members of the club soccer team, invited me to Tri-Kap and introduced me to who would become my favorite people on campus. In my sophomore fall, I decided to shake out at Tri-Kap because I found a brotherhood that was comprised of brothers who genuinely cared for one another. Over the last year, Tri-Kap has become my family.  Although I was away from the house for the two terms after I became a brother at Tri-Kap (one term was spent working for my congressman in Washington DC, the other was spent on the Classics FSP to Greece), I still feel closest to my brothers at Tri-Kap. In the future, I want the house to succeed in all of its endeavors so I am serving as one of the house’s Programming Chairs for the summer and I will serve as the Academic Chair for this upcoming fall. In the future, I hope to do whatever I can to help and support the brotherhood at 1 Webster Ave. Poatsy, his big, Robbie Bhattacharjee '15, and Robbie's girlfriend Christine Lu '16In terms of a future jobs, I have ambitions to get involved with management consulting or investment banking so that I can have the experience and financial flexibility to work towards a JD-MBA degree. Though I am still uncertain about what I would like to do for a career, I could see myself starting my own law firm or going into politics. Whatever career I choose, I aim to stay involved with the Boy Scouts.YiK,

Brotherhood Spotlight: Joe Minichiello

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 07/13/2015 - 22:06
The moment you've all been waiting for has arrived: the undergraduates are bringing back Brotherhood Spotlight for 15X. In an effort to continually improve connections between undergraduate members of the brotherhood and graduates, we will be asking a few brothers to share a little bit about themselves--proudest accomplishments, ambitions, passions, whatever they'd like. We first shine the spotlight on Joe "Mini" Minichiello, a '17 human biology and psychology double major on the pre-med track.

Brothers,

Cheers from Hanover! My name is Joe Minichiello, and I have lived in Pelham, NH for the last 15 years. Growing up, I loved taking camping trips with my family and spending time in/on the water. I graduated from Pelham High School and also attended the St. Paul's School Advanced Studies Program. I am also a HOBY NH alumnus.

Joe and his sister Kaitlyn are both avid Boston sports fans.
I am the Tri-Kap Risk Manager for the full year and the Academic Chair for 15X. Outside of Tri-Kap, I am heavily involved in Dartmouth EMS as an EMT, CPR instructor, and board member. I have been a UGA in East Wheelock, currently in Gile, and in the Choates starting in the fall. I have also been a mentor in the First-Year Peer Mentors program. To top it off, I'm a TA in the genetics lab and will be a TA in the organic chemistry lab starting in the fall.
Joe and Brian White '15 at CPR class.
This past year, I was the Community Training Officer for Dartmouth EMS. When I took over the position, Dartmouth EMS' First Aid and CPR program was operating under DHMC, which was a logistical mess. I worked on a proposal that was passed at the end of winter term for Dartmouth EMS to become its own American Heart Association Training Site, gaining independence and cutting expenses in the process. I am now the Training Site Coordinator for this program, supervising and overseeing the First Aid and CPR program at Dartmouth, which certified 435 students, faculty, and community members in spring term alone. I am the Director of Dartmouth EMS for 15X and will be the Operations Officer all of next year.
Joe in EMS gear with brothers Andy Solares '15 and Keaton Renta '16.
Tri-Kap means a lot to me. In high school, I lost my best friend to brain cancer. At Dartmouth, I began meeting brothers like Brian White '15, Robbie Bhattacharjee '15, Sanders Davis '14, Andy Solares '15, Chris Loughlin '17 and others with whom I began to gain close friendships with again. I loved the genuine brotherhood that defines Tri-Kap and could not imagine having gone to any other house.
YiK,Joseph Minichiello '17
In the fall, Joe will be applying to the Geisel School of Medicine Early Assurance Program with hopes of continuing at Dartmouth for medical school. After medical school, Joe hopes to practice medicine either in the Boston area or at DHMC.

July 4th Update

Tri-Kap Blog - Wed, 07/08/2015 - 09:27
Brothers,
We hope this post finds you and your families well. This July 4th weekend, the brothers of Kappa Kappa Kappa celebrated the country for which our founder Harrison Hobart fought so bravely. The weekend commenced on Friday at a popular barbecue with Kappa Delta sorority, featuring board games, brews, and barbecue. Saturday, the brotherhood traveled to the Ledges (pictured below), a beautiful setting outside of West Lebanon featuring cliffs, swimming holes, and rapids. As we basked on the rocks and lounged in the water, the brothers sang patriotic tunes to the surrounding pines. That afternoon, our Grill Master Joe Minichiello '17 cooked up some amazing barbecue for the brothers. As night set in, the brotherhood celebrated together in our temporary home on West Wheelock.
The celebration continued on Monday and Tuesday, which featured two straight wins in IM softball (including one a 19-1 win over Beta), and our Summer Treasurer Chris Loughlin's 21st birthday.
Despite the lack of access to our hallowed halls on 1 Webster this summer, the brotherhood remains as strong as ever. We cannot wait to continue our adventures this summer with a cabin trip, potential road trip to Rhode Island, and further exploration of the Upper Valley.

Spring Term Update

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 06/15/2015 - 19:25
Brothers,

After a long Spring term, we can look back on the last term in our old house with a feeling of pride. The house endured a long winter whose snow lasted well into April.

However, our hallowed halls held on through the winter, thanks in no small part to House Manager of the Year, Will Bollenbach '15. He was able to bring the award to Tri-Kap, filling the shoes of alumni board member Matt Graves '14 as he mentored first-timers George Philipose '15 and Sam Libby '17 throughout the term. While this term was one that held onto our laurels for executives, we came one game (one could even say one inning) short of defending our intramural softball title despite the best efforts of notable competitors Brian White '15, Sam Agler '17 and Kevin Kim '16 while the Master's duo Danny Katz '16 and Charles Cai '16 added key at-bats in the final.

Luckily for the brothers of Tri-Kap, we were able to rally from the defeat the next weekend to enjoy the beloved Green Key Weekend. After days of pong, alumni visits, and concerts, our hallowed hall looked spectacular in the early sunlight of Sunday morning. While alumni filled up our spare couches, spring had finally sprung.

(7 a.m.)
With new, warm weather surrounding us, we enjoyed a Spikeball on the front lawn, playing with our dog, Zeus, and, perhaps most of all, a handful of barbecues. Programming chairs young and old, from James Howe '17 to Josh Schoenbart '16 to Brian Grumka '15 we cobbled together some artery-clogging feasts to stave off finals stress.

Inspired by our passion for grilling, our philanthropy chair, Brendan Krimsky '17 conceived of the Tri-Kap Hotdog Eating Contest. All of the hundreds in proceeds went to the "I Care I Cure" charity dedicated to finding better treatments for childhood cancer. In the first annual competition, the brotherhood's own Kevin Wang '15 ate a hot dog every minute over the seven minute contest, crushing the competitors from Phi Delt.

Sadly, after weeks in the indecisive, unpredictable Hanover springtime, it came time for us to bid the term farewell. While 1 Webster may never be the same exact house after the renovations project, we set out to enjoy the waning time we had in the house as best we could with the fellow men we call brothers.
(At Senior Week meetings, ex-President Anka Tezcan '15 addresses the brotherhood)
Spring term 2015 was the capstone for the many decades we spent at the most recent Kappa Lodge and will never be forgotten in hearts of our brothers. I all the hope in the world for us a as a society and nothing but the best wishes for the outgoing Class of 2015.

IM Championship

Tri-Kap Blog - Tue, 03/03/2015 - 14:31
Yesterday, the brotherhood rekindled its IM dynasty with a resounding 8-1 victory over Sigma Nu in the IM Hockey finals. The victory capped off a perfect season for the team, which went undefeated in the regular season and tore through the competition in the playoffs as well. In the finals, Tri-Kap was lead by Scott Lehman '17 who scored a hat trick and our treasurer, Brett Szalapski '15, who added two goals of his own. Through the season, the team enjoyed the full-throated support of the brotherhood, including a three man "management" team and a raucous heckle crew at each game. We're looking forward to continuing our success in IM sports with softball in the Spring.

Montreal Trip

Tri-Kap Blog - Tue, 02/24/2015 - 12:44
This term, the brotherhood eschewed a traditional formal to instead take a trip to Montreal. Brothers, some with dates, went up this last weekend for Montreal's Festival of Lights, and enjoyed the sights and the nightlife of the city. Following a debaucherous and rowdy weekend, we were all tired, but determined to make another trip up North in the Spring.

Tri-Kap's Faculty Mixer

Tri-Kap Blog - Sun, 02/01/2015 - 16:54
This Friday, Tri-Kap hosted its first ever faculty mixer. Brothers invited their favorite professors from around campus to 1 Webster Avenue to enjoy their company, share a little wine with them, and get to know them a little bit better outside of the classroom. We had a great turnout, and were happy to have an alum, Professor Roger Ulrich '77, as one of our guests.

Brothers cleaning and preparing the Great Hall for the MixerThe professors that came seemed to have a good time and were appreciative of the opportunity to get a better understanding of fraternities at Dartmouth. After the success we experienced on Friday, we plan to host a similar mixer every term.

Tri-Kap Blog - Thu, 01/22/2015 - 17:28
This last weekend, fraternities around campus held Winter Rush, and Tri-Kap welcomed three new members in to our brotherhood. We are really excited with the guys we got, and we look forward to teaching them about our house and our values. Below are pictures of brothers during rush and the three new members:

Dean Ameer Visits Tri-Kap

Tri-Kap Blog - Sun, 11/02/2014 - 22:01
On October 24th, Dean Inge-Lise Ameer came to Tri-Kap to talk to the brotherhood about her life and her experience as Dean of Dartmouth. The brothers really appreciated the opportunity to meet Dean Ameer and talk to her in a casual setting. The brotherhood listened to Dean Ameer discuss the current campus climate, her involvement with the Tri-Kap Capital Campaign, and her path to her current position. She also spent time taking brothers questions about any and all subjects that came up. Dean Ameer spent over an hour at the house and only left because she had another appointment. We were really happy to have her come over and look forward to working with her more through the process.
