MLK Day

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 01/18/2010 - 14:32

Today we celebrate the work and life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
This day is especially relevant to Tri-Kap historically. Dr. King visited Dartmouth in 1962 and gave a speech entitled "Towards Freedom" in Dartmouth Hall 105. Afterwards, he came to our house for a reception. Tri-Kap was chosen because, as a local fraternity, we had a diverse brotherhood that was not restricted by most national organizations' strict segregation policies.
After the reception at 1 Webster, Dr. King famously stated: "Well, that's the best KKK meeting I've ever been to."
The full transcript of his speech can be read here.

Tri-Kap Halloween

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 11/09/2009 - 00:26
Tri-Kap hosted the Third Annual Webster Avenue Halloween Party for the Upper Valley on October 31st, and it was a great success.

Upper Valley children visit the hallowed halls of Tri-Kap for some Halloween activities

Many children from the area came to enjoy stories by the fire in our living room, a haunted house in our basement, a dunk tank, trick-or-treat stations, and facepainting. Thanks to Sig Ep, GDX, Alpha Phi, and AZD for their help setting up and manning the events!

In addition, we were incredibly honored to host Jim Kim, President of the College, and his family, in their first public appearance at a Greek house this year.

Wiz Khalifa and the Homecoming Dance Party

Tri-Kap Blog - Fri, 10/30/2009 - 01:39
The brothers of Tri-Kap put on the best homecoming party of recent memory last week; rapper Wiz Khalifa, an up-and-coming performer from Pittsburgh, graced out Kappa stage for a full-fledged concert right in our living room.

Blair Randall '11, a.k.a. DJ Kemmik, opened, showing off some of his amazing talent.

Afterwards, Kemmik was DJ for the three-hour dance party that followed. Needless to say, it was a very sweaty and very successful affair.

***************************

Saturday included a reception for all visiting alumni, who were able to stop by, have a snack, and mingle by the fire with current undergraduates. Our most esteemed guests included Tri-Kaps John Mitchell '60 and Tom Cutter '62, who regaled brothers with stories of a clean house and good furniture.

Expect more to come from our multi-talented brothers!

Cloudy With a Chance of Wine

Tri-Kap Blog - Wed, 10/07/2009 - 13:18
Last week, the brothers of Kappa Kappa Kappa hosted the creators of the recent Pixar release, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Phil Lord ’97 and Chris Miller ’97. After a screening of the movie and discussion with the two alumni, an after-party was held at Tri-Kap.

Interested students and brothers were welcome to enjoy chilled wine, some snacks, and chat with the creators of the U.S.'s box office chart topper for two consecutive weeks.

Lord and Miller are also known for the short-lived MTV cartoon series "Clone High," which was cancelled after complaints from offended Indians for the satirical portrayal of Gandhi.

A Summer of Adventure

Tri-Kap Blog - Mon, 08/17/2009 - 10:38
Brothers,
It has been quite an eventful summer. One of the most exciting developments was bringing home the Intramural Soccer Champshionship. Our trophies --- green Dartmouth hats --- will forever be a sign of our impeccable skill, only to be matched by our unparalleled sportsmanship.

Conrad Whitaker '11 pursues the ball during a friendly against TDX.

The weather has become increasingly good as the summer has progressed, beckoning Tri-Kaps to enjoy what the Granite State has to offer.

Tri-Kap also hosted Fieldstock events, including a bouncy castle, which entertained many a Dartmouth student.

Have you seen my girlfriend? Jinwoo Baik '11 timidly approaches the bouncy pit abyss

Which one of these is not like the other? Henry Yan, Blair Randall, Sonny Kung, and Sean Lee keep their dates upright at summer formal.
And, to top it all off, we are overjoyed by the arrival of our puppies, Sam and Parker.

Lock-in

Tri-Kap Blog - Wed, 05/06/2009 - 00:06
First off, apologies must be made for the tardiness of this blog update, which has long been overdue. Our termly Lock-In was this past weekend (or rather, two weekends ago), beginning on a beautiful Saturday morning when the entire brotherhood peregrinated to a lush soccer field about a mile from campus. While certainly some of us were less than ecstatic about the early rising and the interruption of the usual grace period needed to recuperate from the previous night's revelries, the smell of freshly cut grass and New Hampshire's curiously fresh morning air quickly awoken us to eager anticipation of the day's activities. Nature's own coffee and hangover cure. With an ample supply of bottled water and enough sports paraphernalia to make any teenage kid deliriously content for a day, we quickly set up games of kickball, soccer, and capture-the flag.

Michael Brasher '10 seems titillated at the thought of taking off his shoes.

Alec Brodsky '11 is ready for some baseball. Too bad his shirt suggests otherwise.

Andrew Jean-Louis '09 (front), Adam Merber '10, Joseph Pena '10, and Samir Mehta '10 scrimmage around.

Islam Fayed '10 at bat in our game of kickball.

After a fun-filled day at the soccer fields, we returned to the house and ate our fill of BBQ pork and steak catered by a nearby Big Fatty's. Following the delicious, and might I add, manly, meal, we partook in our long-practiced Lock-In tradition of the Lock-In discussion, where much insightful banter was exchanged regarding the future direction of the house. This was followed by yet another important tradition: the Ryder Cup competition, between the 09's, and the 10's and 11's. After a heated contest, the underclassmen emerged triumphant, and the upperclassmen, though dignified in defeat, rest assured knowing that the legacy of pong excellence will continue.

In other news, it has been six days (and counting) since Tri-Kap has been clean and probation-free. To celebrate this newfound freedom, our social chairs, Cameron Sharman '10 and Michael Abendroth '10 have loaded the upcoming weeks with many events that we are all eagerly anticipating. Stay tuned for more updates!

Great Joys

Tri-Kap Blog - Thu, 04/16/2009 - 11:22

Kappa Kappa Kappa was lucky enough to have won two awards at this year's annual Order of Omega Awards, held in Collis Commonground. First, our house won the overall award for service, after hosting dozens of philanthropic events, working countless hours on projects, and raising thousands for charity.

Fortunately, the College also recognized the man behind these accomplishments: Tri-Kap '10 Joseph Pena. Mr. Pena has encouraged the house to participate in service events and activities and has personally brought an incredible amount pride to the house, but also (although humble as he is), himself.

We congratulate Joe and ourselves for our awards!

Kids celebrating the festivities in Collis Commonground

In this spirit, our Annual Easter Egg Hunt, held on Easter Sunday this year, was a huge community success. Hundreds of kids came to look for well-hidden eggs in an extremely well-decorated Collis Commonground, while enjoying pizza, snacks, and collective mirth. After every single egg had been found, children collected prizes and sat down with their families for a viewing of "Dora the Explorer: Egg Hunt."

The event was an unmitigated success, thanks to the tireless efforts of Programming Chairs Jinwoo Baik '11 and Blair Randall '11, as well as Joe Pena '10 and all of the brothers who volunteered to make it such a successful event.
